Five Pergola Lines, One Workshop

Berlin Gardens is a family-owned shop in Pennsylvania that's been building outdoor structures since 1988. Their pergola catalog covers the three classic material choices — treated wood you can stain, vinyl that hoses clean, and Cellular PVC that takes paint without rotting — in five distinct silhouettes.

The thinking behind the lineup: pick the structure you want by silhouette and proportion, then pick the material that fits how much maintenance you actually feel like doing. The Outback is a casual treated-wood pergola with classic end caps and shade slats. The Porter is the same Hampton-style profile in low-maintenance Cellular PVC. The Urbana is a vinyl version with crisp, clean lines. Vineyard and Mendoza round out the wood line for traditional and modern looks.

Every line ships with the same engineering — pressure-treated structural members, scrolled or classic end-cut options, and Berlin Gardens' standard sizes from 10′×10′ up to 18′×24′. Lead times run a few weeks; we order, deliver, and install.

Porter

The low-maintenance pergola. Pressure-treated wood wrapped in Cellular PVC — structurally a wood pergola, surface-wise a paintable PVC that doesn't rot, peel, or need restaining. Modern checkered top design with a contemporary windswept profile.

Standard Features

  • Pressure-treated wood core, Cellular PVC wrap
  • 8′′×8′′ posts
  • Modern checkered top design
  • Paintable surface — spec any color
  • Standard sizes 10′×10′ to 18′×24′

Options

Vineyard

A treated-wood pergola with the same checkered top design as the Porter, but with the warmth and character of a stained wood frame. Choose Mocha or Cedartone stain — both let the grain show through. Best for backyards where the structure is meant to read as wood, not surface.

Standard Features

  • Stained pressure-treated wood
  • 8′′×8′′ posts
  • Modern checkered top design
  • Mocha or Cedartone stain (other stains by special order)
  • Standard sizes 10′×10′ to 18′×24′

Urbana

The vinyl alternative. Crisp, clean lines, classic styling, and very little upkeep — rinse with a hose and you're done. White is the standard color; slate gray and clay are popular alternates. Pressure-treated wood inserts inside the posts and beams keep the structure rigid; the vinyl shell does the cosmetic work.

Standard Features

  • White vinyl exterior, pressure-treated wood inserts
  • 6′′×6′′ posts
  • Scrolled or classic end caps
  • Hose-clean maintenance — no staining or painting

Options

Outback

The casual treated-wood pergola. Scrolled or classic end cuts, 2′′×2′′ shade slats running the long axis, optional arched braces. The Outback reads relaxed — like a structure that's been there a while — rather than architectural. Best for backyards where the pergola is a destination, not a centerpiece.

Standard Features

  • Stained pressure-treated wood
  • 6′′×6′′ posts (8′′×8′′ available)
  • Scrolled or classic end cuts
  • 2′′×2′′ shade slats and pressure-treated purlins
  • Mocha, Cedartone, Stormcloud, Black Onyx stain options

Berlin Gardens Mendoza wood pergola in mocha stain with classic end cuts

Mendoza

The most open-and-airy pergola in the Berlin Gardens lineup. Wider 2′′×8′′ purlins instead of slats, generous spacing between rafters, scrolled or classic end cuts. The Mendoza embraces the great outdoors — the top is more about defining the space than blocking sun. Pair with Dia shades or curtains when you want shade on demand.

Standard Features

  • Stained pressure-treated wood
  • 6′′×6′′ posts
  • Scrolled or classic end cuts
  • 2′′×8′′ purlins (no slats)
  • Round columns available as upgrade

Three Materials, Five Lines

The Berlin Gardens pergola lineup spans the three classic outdoor-structure materials. Each comes with different maintenance and aesthetic tradeoffs.

Treated Wood

Vineyard, Outback, Mendoza

Clear-grade pressure-treated lumber. Stainable in Mocha or Cedartone (other options on request). Ages naturally over time; restain every few years to keep color saturated.

Maintenance: Restain every 3–5 years. Inspect joinery once a year.

Vinyl

Urbana

Classic vinyl shell over treated-wood structural inserts. White, slate gray, or clay. Rinses clean with a hose and mild detergent — no staining, painting, or treating ever required.

Maintenance: Rinse once or twice a year. That's it.

Cellular PVC

Porter

Engineered Azek-style PVC with a wood-like surface. Paintable in any color — without the rot risk of wood. The premium of the three materials, with the maintenance profile of vinyl.

Maintenance: Touch-up paint as desired. Hose down for dust.

Berlin Gardens Pergola FAQ

Common questions about the lines, materials, and what to spec.

How do I pick between Outback, Vineyard, and Mendoza?
They're all wood. Outback is the casual one — tight 2×2 shade slats, classic profile. Vineyard has a more contemporary checkered top. Mendoza is the open-air pick — wider purlins, fewer of them, more sky visible through the top. If you can't decide, the Outback is the most versatile.
Cellular PVC, vinyl, or wood — which lasts longest?
All three last decades when installed properly. Wood needs periodic restaining; vinyl and Cellular PVC do not. Cellular PVC is paintable, so you can change the color over time. Vinyl is locked to its factory color. The differences are about maintenance preference, not lifespan.
Do these come pre-built or do you assemble on-site?
Berlin Gardens builds the structure at their Pennsylvania workshop and ships it to the install site. Our team unloads, sets the posts, and assembles. A typical pergola goes up in a day, two for the larger sizes.
What sizes are available?
Standard sizes run 10′×10′ to 18′×24′ in 2′ increments. Pergolas 20′+ on a side use 6 posts instead of 4. Custom dimensions are available; expect a longer lead time. Berlin Gardens specs sizes by the outside-of-top dimensions; the posts sit flush with the perimeter.
Can I add privacy walls or curtains later?
Yes — privacy walls (horizontal shadow box, vertical lattice, etc.), Dia retractable shades, and curtains can be added at any time. Many customers add a wall after living with the pergola for a season and figuring out which way the wind comes from.
