What Is a Semi-Inground Pool?
A semi-inground pool — sometimes called a recessed pool or partially buried pool — is an above ground pool that's installed partially or fully below grade. The pool wall sits in an excavated hole, and the surrounding area is backfilled and finished with decking, pavers, or landscaping.
The result looks like a traditional in-ground pool, but uses Doughboy's proven above ground pool construction. It's available exclusively from Doughboy because their galvanized steel walls and heavy-gauge polymer components are engineered to handle the lateral earth pressure that comes with burial.
Not every above ground pool can go in the ground — most aren't built to withstand soil pressure. Doughboy pools are specifically designed and warranted for recessed installation, which is why this option is a Doughboy exclusive.
Why Homeowners Choose Semi-Inground
A recessed Doughboy pool gives you the best of both worlds — the aesthetics of in-ground with the value of above ground.
In-Ground Appearance
When finished with decking or landscaping, a recessed pool is virtually indistinguishable from a traditional in-ground pool. Guests will never know the difference.
Significant Cost Savings
A recessed Doughboy pool typically costs a fraction of what a comparable in-ground pool installation would run. You get the same backyard transformation without the in-ground price tag.
Up to 7 Feet Deep
Doughboy's expandable liner system allows water depths up to 7 feet — deeper than many traditional in-ground pools. Perfect for families who want real swimming depth.
Green Grass to Blue Water
A typical recessed pool installation can go from excavation to swimming in as few as 4 days. Compare that to weeks or months for a traditional in-ground build.
Deck Integration
Build a wraparound deck flush with the pool rim for seamless step-in entry. Add a patio, outdoor kitchen, or lounge area right at pool level.
Lifetime Warranties
Doughboy pools are backed by industry-leading lifetime warranties on the structure. That same warranty protection applies to recessed installations.
How a Recessed Pool Installation Works
The process is straightforward — here's what a typical semi-inground installation looks like.
Excavation
The site is excavated to the desired depth. You choose how far to recess the pool — from a few inches for a raised look down to fully buried for maximum depth.
Base Preparation & Pool Assembly
The bottom is leveled and prepared, then the Doughboy pool wall, uprights, and top rails are assembled inside the hole — just like a standard above ground installation.
Liner & Backfill
An expandable liner is installed (available in depths up to 7 feet), water begins filling, and the area around the pool wall is backfilled with clean material.
Decking & Finishing
The deck, pavers, or landscaping is installed around the pool rim. Equipment is hooked up, chemicals are balanced, and you're swimming.
Depth & Configuration Options
Every yard is different. The recessed pool system is flexible — you control how deep and how visible the pool sits.
12"–24" below grade
The pool wall rises a couple of feet above ground, with decking built up to meet the rim. A great option when full excavation isn't practical — you still get deck-level entry and a finished look.
About half the wall below grade
The most popular configuration. Roughly half the pool wall sits below ground, the other half above. Easier excavation than fully buried, with excellent depth and a low-profile look.
Up to 7' deep with expandable liner
The entire pool wall sits below grade, with the rim at ground level. Combined with an expandable liner, this gives you depths up to 7 feet — true in-ground depth for serious swimmers.
Good to Know
Recessed installations require proper drainage around the pool wall and may need building and electrical permits depending on your municipality. Your installer should assess the soil conditions and water table at your site before excavation. No diving board installations — "No Diving" signage is required on all above ground pools regardless of depth.
